During this year's Winter Solctice, the Freedom From Religion Foundation and America Atheists got several campaigns designed to give non-believers a voice in a Christian dominated space.
The American organisation presents a colourful, irreverent banner depicting a different kind of nativity scene: the birth of the Bill of Rights. Standing or kneeling in adoration are constitutional framers Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, plus the Statue of Liberty. A copy of the Bill of Rights, which was adopted on Dec. 15, 1791, is in a manger.
Lots of those atheists do still believe all Christians do take god to be born on the 25th of December and that they honour him with everything Christians do take their own but is really from the pagan hereditary.
Sarah Paling puts up a high voice that it is the liberty of the American being put in danger when all the Christmas celebration would not be kept with all the 'Christian symbols'. Though she does not seam to understand all those figures like father Christmas, Christmas trees a.o. do have nothing to do with the real birth of Christ Jesus (which was 4BCE, October 17). Like many Americans she does not see that all those elements have more in common with pagan traditions than with the events that took place in Palestine two millennia ago.
She not only ignored Jefferson’s well known views on Christianity (didn’t believe in the divinity of Christ), but she also tossed abortion into the “war on Christmas” meme.
Aaron Litz say:
The whole reason why these people can actually convince themselves that they are right is for the same reason why they can believe their religion is real; they work from a preconcieved notion of what is “true” and then work backwards to fit everything into place necessary to make it so.
They start with an assertion like “Thomas Jefferson was Christian and would have hated the War on Christmas” and work backward from there, filling in the gaps with made up stuff and changing the facts when necessary. It’s how they handle Creationism, Obamacare, and Trickle-Down Econimics. You start with the ending you want, and work end-to-beginning, regardless of the realities. It’s how their minds work, and why the intricacies of the real world have absolutely no bearing on what they believe. They begind with an assumption of the end, and wear blinders to block out anything that doesn’t fit with their “truth.”
Annie Laurie Gaylor, FFRF Co-President, has good reason to say:
“The real reason for the season is the Winter Solstice, the darkest, shortest day of the year, a time for celebration for millennia in the Northern Hemisphere because it signified the rebirth of the sun.”She added
“For a fact, the Christians stole Christmas. We don’t mind sharing the season with them, but we don’t like their pretense that it is the birthday of Jesus.”
American Atheists Public Relations
Director Dave Muscato said:
+++“Most people don’t care about any religious ties to the season because church and religion are not what Americans care about during this time of year—they care about family and friends and giving presents and food and having fun,”
“Many so-called ‘Christmas’ traditions celebrated by Americans have nothing to do with Christianity. For example, the North Pole and Santa traditions come from Nordic and Germanic pagan traditions, and caroling, yule logs, mistletoe, holly wreaths all pre-date Christianity,”
“We all love this time of year,”Silverman added.
“Christianity has been trying to claim ownership of the season for hundreds of years. But the winter solstice came first and so did its traditions. The season belongs to everybody.”
