Not created to be on our own

When God created the earth and placed human beings on this planet His intentions were that they would multiply and live peacefully together.

It was not in God's Plan that we all would live as individuals in our own little cocoon or bubble, isolated from the rest of the world.

2020 was a year where we were forced to go in isolation. Even to honour God and to have religious services we had to find means to have celebrations and Breaking of bread, without being together.

We once were a society that centred around family. Multiple generations often lived together under one roof and when families did live separately, they never moved very far. There always have been events to celebrate with each other. Often people looked for reasons to come together and have fun with each other in group. These days, we have become more of an individualistic culture. Most people today rely on themselves. In previous generations members of a family often came to live not so far away from the other members. Today, work has required many to live far away from where they were raised. Our connections with other people take place most often in the workplace. But those connections are usually shallow, fickle, and short lived.

In the church, we see this sense of individualism and disconnectedness as well. In certain countries people are obliged to move around because their work. They therefore do not have anymore what they would call their "own church". Some may stake a claim on a church but remain distant and on the margins, attending only when something better isn't going on. And then there are those who may indeed have a committed relationship with a church but they are not all in. They aren't fully known by their community. They don't rely on the Body when they are struggling or in need. Instead, they wear masks that cover the pain of their lives, pretending that everything's okay, even though it's not.

This year literally masks had to be covering our face. All over the continent religious people could not come together anymore to have a worship service together. Now the individualism and doing life on our own is not part of God's design. In creating mankind, God desired for us to participate in that community which in this corona period could not be realised in real life, but had to happen in virtual meetings.

Jehovah didn't create man to be in community with him alone. After he created the world and Adam, God said,

"It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him" (Genesis 2:18).

God created man and woman to be in community together, to create families and live together, bearing the image of God.

Scripture is all about community. God chose the Israelites to be his people.

"And I will walk among you and will be your God, and you shall be my people" (Leviticus 26:12).

They lived and worshipped him together in community. Following the death, resurrection, and ascension of Christ, God then instituted the church, the Body of Christ as a community of believers.

"Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it." (1 Corinthians 12:27).

This year, we as members of our church-community were not able to come together in real life with our brothers and sisters. But thanks to the contemporary electronica we were blessed to be able to meet by all those modern electric tools. Several electronic applications made it possible that we even could meet with more people from all over the world.

Being made to live in a humble, worshipful, and loving dependency upon God and in a loving and humble interdependency with others, we could share our union with Christ.

Not only were we created to be in community but we also need community. When we can come together we can share ideas and strengthen each other in our way of thinking and handling. In a way there is also social control. We need godly brothers and sisters to watch our back. We need to be connected in community where we can all be on alert together for the dangers that are all around us.

The truth is, we need each other. We need to trust, rely on, and depend upon other believers. God gave us each other to walk alongside, encourage, and spur one another one in the faith. The writer to the Hebrews says,

"And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near" (Hebrews 10:24-25).

James 5:16 says,

"Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working."

We are to carry each other's burdens (Galatians 6:2), care for each other's practical needs (Romans 12:13, Hebrews 13:16), warn each other of sin (1 Thessalonians 5:14) and rejoice and mourn with each other (Romans 12:15).

Though society might tell us that we can do life on our own, God's word tells us that we simply can't function without each other (1 Corinthians 12). We need each other and we need community. But we should know that in these times of the coronavirus we need to be careful not to bring others in danger, creating possibilities to infect each other.

At the moment we still do have to keep to the corona measures to keep everybody safe. We should not claim as some other Christians and certain Jews do that we have to have the religious freedom to have our worship and praise services in group. There are the meeting tools like Zoom, Meats, HouseParty, Jitsi, Hangouts, Google Meets, a.o. to join a virtual meeting. Lets make use of them for still some more months. And lets hope that from September onwards we shall be able to have again a normal life with many people, able to go to shops, restaurants, hotels and other places, like going back to a prayer hall or church.

Even when not created to be on our own, for the time being we shall have to be happy to keep it cosy in our small corona bubble.

Good time to sort out your friends and contacts

In these corona times we have to limit our contacts, keep social distance and have to keep ourselves healthy and safe.

In life we meet lots of people in lots of different situations; We encounter good but also bad things. Bad events we best forget as soon as possible, but even better for the next time we better avoid such bad things.

Today we have come in a time where it should be easier to avoid bad things, bad people and bad events. All negativism we can miss as toothache.

Got a friend causing problems in your life? Before you cut him or her out have a look at this so called 'friend' and check if it is really a person to have as friend or a person you should be concerned about his way of life and would be some one who could use your help more than you need him or her.

Someone in your small group says insensitive things? Leave that small group and find a new one, if you are not able to bring that person to reason.

Someone at work doesn’t understand or respect your faith? You could avoid that person but you also could try to find out what he or she knows about your faith and come to get to know your faith better. Often people have no idea about someone's faith and go by 'sayings' or ideas which float around.

Tired of being made fun of in the public square? Some would withdraw into their Christian bubble.

Parents in your kid’s class not raising their kids the way you like? (Corona-aside: Remember classes?) Surround yourself with people who make you feel safe and comfortable.

In life, there are too many things to cope with. Too often we lose too much energy on worthless cases. At this time of restrictions, it is ideal to make it done with all the negativism which may be around you. Concentrate on the positive things and keep contact with positive people.

But do not forget if possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. With the restrictions, it can well be that you do not have many contacts, and when on the street some people may look strange at you or take an offensive attitude. Forgive them and think they are in a 'corona fear mood'.

We should be aware of the fact that denying someone your presence can also be considered as the ultimate punishment. Then you should think about that matter if this isn’t that God’s final judgment?

But now we can keep the distance of many people without having to hurt them. We can leave those aside with whom our relationship is not evolving positively. We best invest now in positive relationships and do not lose to much time with the wrong contacts.

A living Word giving confidence

In these particular times people look for solutions for their restricted life. Because of the corona measures, many feel very restricted in their liberty. Some therefore want to go to court to reverse or stop the corona restrictions. They do forget that protecting the citizens in our society is the responsible role a government should take care off. Protecting everybody habiting in their state, should be the priority of a state.

People may be annoyed that they have to stay in the house or may not meet with so many people, but they should look it from the positive side. Now they can have more time for themselves.

In that extra time given, people also could use some more time with the One they can not see, but Who is always there. That Unseen God has given His Word. And now we could take some extra time to look at that Word, given to us with The Bible.

The Bible is not just a book of theological doctrine and premises; it is the living, breathing Word of God. In it, we encounter the very Voice of God—the same voice that created the stars, our universe with water, plants and animals. The same Voice which led a lot of people, guiding them through difficult situations, helping them when they needed help.

Scripture is not just about learning ancient truths. It is about God speaking to us, in real-time, with real direction. Without that, our souls will shrivel and die.

In “Word of God”  we can find the words of many prophets. one of them was the Nazarene Jesus christ (Jeshua)  Also his words are meticulously notated by his closest disciples, the apostles.
In the Word of the gospel, we can meet the promised one from God, Jesus who is also called the 'son of God', 'the sent one from God' and the Messiah or Christ.

That great preacher wanted to show to everybody (who wanted to hear) Who the Only Real God is. He also wanted others to know that he is the Way to God, the gate to God's Kingdom. He who gives us a taste of the goodness of God and teaches us that, in all things, we can trust him. In Jesus, we see that at our worst moment, he still loved us, and we know that if he loved us then he will never leave us now.

The apostle Peter advises us to nourish ourself constantly on that good gospel Word. We should drink it like the milk a baby drinks to survive and without which it will remain severely undernourished.

For many people, the only Bible they get is from the preacher on Sunday. Not having a daily quiet time, where you pour God’s Word into you, means you will shrivel up spiritually — and it won’t matter how long you’ve been a Christian or how many facts you know. We need the constant intake of the imperishable, life-giving Word of God. Even Jesus was saturated in it.

Let us not forget that all human teaching passes away but God His teaching shall stay forever. In times of crisis, lots of people bring up lots of questions and often also start doubting God, Who they suddenly seem to know as the One to blame. When there are no services any more in your church, please do not forget to regularly read the Bible and to meditate on it. If you have a partner or when you have children, please do take time with them to read the Bible and talk about what is been read. Make sure the Word of God can be echoing in your house at regular times. that way you also shall feel how God can also with you and your family and give you confidence to cope in this particular time.
