Vatican lifts ban on married priests for Eastern Catholic churches in US, Canada, Australia

Catholic World News - November 17, 2014
The Vatican has lifted a longstanding ban on the ordination of married men to the priesthood in the Eastern Catholic churches.

The tradition and discipline of the Eastern churches allows for the ordination of married men to the priesthood. (Bishops must be unmarried, however, and once ordained, a priest cannot marry.) The Vatican has repeatedly approved this tradition, while insisting on the importance of priestly celibacy in the Latin rite.
However, in the late 19th century, with the arrival of many Byzantine Catholic immigrants in Canada, Latin-rite prelates complained that the presence of married Catholic priests could create a “grave scandal.” The Vatican eventually ruled that the Eastern churches could not ordain married men in the countries where their communities form a minority of the Catholic population. The rule has historically applied primarily to Canada, the US, and Australia.

With a decree approved by Pope Francis, and signed on June 14 by Cardinal Leonard Sandri, the Congregation for the Eastern Churches has now rescinded that ban. Catholic bishops of the Eastern churches serving in eparchies (dioceses) in the West are explicitly authorized to ordain married men.
The decree requires a bishop of the Eastern Catholic Church to “give prior notice, in writing, to the Latin Bishop of the candidate’s place of residence, so as to obtain his opinion and any relevant information [regarding the candidate].” An Eastern-rite bishop who ordained a married man for service in another country is directed to inform the episcopal conference of that country, and the Congregation for the Eastern Churches, of this action.

In practice, the ban on married priests had been relaxed in recent years, with the tacit acceptance of the Holy See. Some married priests from the East have been assigned to serve parishes in the West, and some men from the West have traveled to the East to be ordained before returning to serve at home. In a few cases, bishops of the Eastern churches have simply ignored the ban, ordaining married American men to serve in American parishes.

The new Vatican document allowing for the ordination of married men notes that when the ban was originally imposed, thousands of Catholics of the Ruthenian Catholic community in Canada left to join the Orthodox Church. The document also notes that when Pope Benedict XVI issued Anglicanorum Coetibus, allowing for the reception of Anglican communities into the Catholic Church, he explicitly provided for the presence of married Catholic priests. In 2012, Pope Benedict remarked that “the ministry of married priests is a component of the ancient Eastern traditions,” which he encouraged the Eastern Catholic churches to maintain.

Prince George Appeal letter

Prince George Appeal letter

Date: Sun, 15 Jun 2014 14:24:21 -0700

Dear Brethren and Sisters,
When Paul was on his second missionary journey he received a message through the spirit of a man from Macedonia asking him to come and help them. (Acts 16:9.) I am making that same appeal to you.

I am the recording brother of a small ecclesia in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada. Our ecclesia has shrunk to 13 members over the past 10-15 years. Most of this has been from people moving to other ecclesias throughout North America most of which are still strong, active members of our worldwide ecclesia.

Prince George is a wonderful place to live and work both in the ecclesia and in our day to day lives. We function with a Sunday school, memorial meeting, regular mid week Bible class and a sister’s class. We have had a recent baptism from our seminars and plan to run them again in the fall. Our Sunday school has 5 children in it with 1 more on the way. Their ages range from 3 to 9. There is another even smaller ecclesia in Ft. St. James that we also try and support as much as we can, as it is 2 hours west of Prince George. We would love to continue to grow in numbers as well as spiritual strength. Moving here would allow you to work constantly in Gods vineyard to support the ecclesia as well as reaching out to see if there are any other hearts that are open to receive Gods word.

We would be most grateful if any, young or old, would be willing and able to either visit or relocate to our beautiful part of the world. There are wonderful educational and employment opportunities in our small community of about 80,000. Housing is very affordable and you can enjoy all four seasons of weather when you live here. If you are unable to visit or move to our ecclesia we would appeal to all brothers and sisters in these last days to support and help any ecclesia they can. The world is pressing ever closer into our ecclesia's. We need to stay strong and firm in our foundation of God's word in these last days before Christ's return.

If you have any further questions please feel free to contact the pgchristadelphians or by phone 250-962-8191.With love in our Master name.

Guelph a center of Christadelphia now in database

The Guelph Public Library has a rich database filled with historical photos of Guelph – some dating back as far as the 1800s – but library staff want to see more.
“We were pretty much looking for any photo of Guelph,” said Guelph Public Library archivist Darcy Hiltz.
The library asked people to poke around in their attics and basements, and to flip through their old photo albums and boxes to find long-lost photos of the Royal City for the “Guelph’s Hidden Past” photography contest.

Guelph has always been a center of Christadelphia, as long as there have been Christadelphains in Canada. In fact, it is older than almost any ecclesia in Ontario.

The 2010 Winter Olympics, officially the XXI Olympic Winter Games or the 21st Winter Olympics, was a major international multi-sport event held on February 12–28, 2010, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

82 National Olympic Committees entered teams in the 2010 Winter Olympics to bring fifteen winter sports events.
As in any festival of games many trofees where given. 2010 Winter Olympics medal table

The many medals mean something irreplaceable for the winners. As they stand on the podium to receive their medals what delight to share something of the feeling of being the best in the world, of having achieved one’s dreams! We rejoice with the winners, and commiserate with the losers.

Here no Iron and clay medals. But in the historic papers we do find notes about gaines and losses, and worlds of gold, silver, bronze, iron and clay.
Gold, silver, bronze: when you see the winter victors standing in human glory to receive their medals, just spare a long thought for the way this mixed iron and clay world is heading, and an even longer thought for the value of the crown which God offers you with his Son in this world made perfect.

The Toronto East Ecclesia

The Toronto East Ecclesia:

For the last several years the members of the Toronto East Ecclesia (TEE) have authorized its unity representatives to participate in numerous meetings with both Amended and Unamended representatives. In recent months, the TEE representatives have attended meetings with members of concerned Ecclesias, with the aim of assisting them in understanding the wording and intent of the Unity Agreement 2008 (UA08), as well as focusing on convening an inter-ecclesial study on fellowship. The TEE continues to support these ongoing initiatives. During this lengthy process the membership of the TEE was regularly updated with the findings and progress of these various meetings and discussions. In a joint letter dated March 7th, 2009, sent to the surrounding Ecclesias, the Toronto East Ecclesia, in collaboration with the three other Toronto Ecclesias, agreed to temporarily “suspend the extension of fellowship at the Lord’s table with the signatory Unamended ecclesias”. The Brothers and Sisters of the TEE supported this suspension with the express understanding that within a set amount of time they would revisit this decision. At the semi-annual business meeting on October 28th, 2009, after the set time required by the members had elapsed, it was agreed that the next steps in respect of the UA08 (whether to continue with or lift the suspension) would be decided by an Ecclesial ballot. It was determined by the results of that ballot, by a preponderant majority of the Ecclesia’s membership, that the members of the TEE “agree to lift ‘the pause’ and welcome in fellowship at the Lord’s Table, members in good standing from all Unamended Ecclesias that accept the Unity Agreement 2008”. The result of the ballot was announced to the members of the TEE on Sunday, Dec 6th. The effective date of the Ecclesial decision to lift “the pause” is January 1st, 2010, God-willing. Notwithstanding, we continue to welcome in fellowship members in good standing from Central Ecclesias, including Amended UA08 Ecclesias (paused and non-paused). The Toronto East Ecclesia remains satisfied that the Unity Agreement 2008 (UA08) is a sound document upon which to base Unity. We further maintain our commitment to continue working alongside our Amended and Unamended Brethren alike as we seek to broaden its acceptance, that all Brethren in Christ of like mind and purpose might enjoy full fellowship before the return of our Lord. In the shared Hope of Israel,
On behalf of the Toronto East Ecclesia Brother Brian CarrickRecording Secretary
