Spreken in tongen

Wij worden er bijna om de oren mee geslagen dat ware gelovigen in tongen zouden moeten spreken.

Ik vraag mij dan wel dikwijls af wat zij bedoelen met dat 'in tongen spreken'. Volgens mij gaat het in de Heilige Schrift namelijk over de mogelijkheid zich zodanig uit te drukken dat anderen  het kunnen verstaan. Het gaat over een aan de persoon oneigenlijke taal. Als men in een vreemde taal sprak in de oudheid, sprak men 'in tongen'.

De apostel Paulus spreek over 8 verschillende gaven waarvan het spreken in een vreemde taal ook één was. Het 'spreken in tongen' ging niet over een gibber gabberish praten of zo maar vreemde klanken uiten die niemand kan verstaan. Het heeft niets te maken met mensen die in trance zijn geraakt en dan allerlei klanken uitschreeuwen die niets lijken te betekenen of waar men geen echte vertaling voor kan geven in een normaal te volgen taal.

Met het naderen van Pinksteren en de nederdaling van de Heilige Geest is dit een graag opgeroepen onderwerp.
Daarom raden wij u graag aan om even het onderstaande artikel door te nemen:

Speaking in tongues

So often we do hear that we as Christians do have to speak in tongues. those who are not able to speak in tongues, what they ever may mean by it, would not be real believers endowed with the new born life.

According to me speaking in tongues is not speaking in gibberish or not uttering words which make no sense for others.
In the early centuries of Christianity and today to speak in tongues or languages was and is only useful when preaching in a foreign country where that language was or is spoken..

It is probable that the apostles were able to bestow Spirit gifts for as long as they lived (Acts 8:14-17); by which time the Christian Church would have attained maturity.
One may wonder how long the ministration of the Spirit gifts would continue.
This being so, any claim in later times to the possession of Holy Spirit gifts, especially speaking in tongues, does not agree with what we have found in the foregoing Scriptures and therefore should not be accepted as valid.
