Broeders van Christus

De "Christadelphians Multiply Group" wordt zoals de praatgroep "Bijbelonderzoekers" onderhouden door Bijbelonderzoekers die behoren tot de Christadelphians of Broeders in Christus. Is er een verschil tussen "Broeders van Christus" en "Broeders in Christus"?

Maar wat zijn deze "Broeders en zusters in Christus" en wat wordt in de bijbel verstaan onder "Broeder in Christus"?

Elles gaat in over de geestelijke broers en schreef hierover: "De 'geringste broeders' van Christus" - Matth. 25:40.

A Living Faith #8 Change

A LIVING FAITH IN ACTION

The ways of Yahweh are unchanging and in an ever changing and uncertain world, we can derive great comfort from that knowledge. We know for certain that what He promises, that He will also do. As Malachi records, Yahweh says, "For I am the LORD, I do not change” (Mal 3:6). Therefore, if we desire reconciliation with our Creator, if we desire to attain His mercy and if we desire to be part of His purpose, then it is we who must change. Yet how hard that process of change can be!

Now thus far we have considered faith as something that must be a living and active force in our lives. Faith requires diligence and effort to sustain; it is not gained by a one off effort and once acquired, faith can be easily lost if it is neglected. Therefore patience and perseverance are required to sustain and develop faith. Further, a willing sacrifice of self and a humble acceptance of the absolute authority of Yahweh is also required, if faith is to be a living and active part of our daily lives. Obeying the Word, obeying the commandments and following the principles of God, must be the fulcrum around which our lives revolve.

Above all there must be a conscious recognition that not by our own strength or abilities will we gain a living faith. We have no inherent merit, we deserve only condemnation, but Yahweh has graciously extended His mercy toward us. He has demonstrated His willingness to count our faith as righteousness. More than this, He has invited His children to commune with Him through prayer. Thus active personal prayer is inseparable from faith. Yahweh will hear and answer sincere prayer that flows from a humble, contrite and honest heart.

With these thoughts in mind then, there is one further step for us to consider that will be an integral component of and arise from a living faith. An active faith will incorporate change and that change will ultimately be fundamental and far reaching in its extent.  Personal change is a product of having a living faith, there must be a complete renewing of the inner man. Paul writes:

“For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.” Romans 6:5-6

We committed ourselves to ‘putting off the old man’, that is the old self that is self seeking and to be renewed according to godly characteristics. No longer enslaved to sin, but freed to serve the Lord our God. If this inner change takes place, then having been united with Christ in the likeness of his death, we will be uplifted in the likeness of his resurrection.  The resurrection to life is certain, becuase this is the express promise of Yahweh. A living faith will trust and believe His word. Yet how often do we doubt? How often do we consider the prospect of failure, rather than the prospect of being part of the divine purpose? Yes, most certainly life is a gift that we do not merit. However, equally certain is Yahweh’s love and mercy towards those who love Him, those who trust and believe in His promises. Paul writes that in Christ:

“all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.” 1Corinthians 1:20

Further through Paul the Spirit says:

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:1-2

No condemnation! Free from sin and death! Now if those thoughts do not stir our highest emotions, our deepest gratitude and inspire a living active faith what will? A living faith will not see or contemplate failure, but rather be inspired to deny the flesh and live according to the spirit. It will desire above all things to be ‘Christ like’, being renewed in the inner man as Paul exhorts:

“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.  And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” Philippians 2:5-8

Rarely are Yahweh’s children asked to forfeit their life in His service. No, the sacrifice and inner change demanded is greater than this. The giving up of life involves the giving up of all that is held dear in the present and dedicating all to His service. A striving to develop attributes of character that are moulded in the image of our Creator.

The death of Christ was the culmination of a life of sacrifice. The more we behold the glory and character of the Lord Jesus, the more we mediate and reflect upon his example, then the more we will grow to be like him. If we are ‘Christ like’ then our lives will exhibit a similar life of sacrifice that is engendered by a living faith. Thus we read:

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2

Children of the light have nothing in common with and no fellowship with those in darkness. Consider the enormity of this wonderful promise:

"Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you. I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the LORD Almighty." 2Corinthians 6:17-18

The calling is to be separate and this will in no measure perturb those who have an active faith that desires above all to put the Commandments of Christ into action day by day. Indeed it will be their desire to keep apart from those who do not know the Lord and those who do not love and follow the Word.

They have noting in common with those who remain or stray into darkness. A living active faith desires one thing above everything, namely to know the Lord their God and Jesus Christ whom he has sent. They desire to be in the image of their Creator and will shun all who do not have this image imprinted upon them. So Paul is moved to write:

“But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord”  2Corinthians 3:18

How wonderful, how gracious, how longsuffering, how merciful and how loving is Yahweh! May our response be the deepest desire to have a living faith that in some small, albeit imperfect way, reflects His divine glory.

2 Corinthians 5:19 - God in Christ

 “in that God was in Christ reconciling to Himself a world of humankind, no longer reckoning to them their trespasses–and He entrusted to us the message of reconciliation.” (2Co 5:19 MHM)

The thought many would like for us to see in this verse is that God was in
Christ, and being in Christ this makes Christ God Almighty. This, of course, is not what the verse is saying.

God was in Christ, or by means of Christ, reconciling the world to
himself. That is all that is says.
In Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. — 2 Corinthians 5:19, New Revised Standard Version
God was using Christ as the instrument to restore his relationship with humanity.

Jesus himself gives us a hint as to its meaning, when he tells his
disciples: “In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.” (John 14:20)
Here Jesus likens his relationship to his Father to his relationship to his disciples. Now if his being in his father means that he is God, then his being in his disciples and his disciples’ being in him, would make the disciples God Almighty also, since, according to trinitarian philosophy, Jesus is God Almighty. Of course, none of these scriptures mean that Jesus is God Almighty, but it does show a closeness, a harmony between God and Jesus, and between Jesus and his disciples.
Jesus praying to his God (John 17:1,3), that his disciples “may all be one; even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us.” Here it is plainly stated that the two unions are the same kind of union.

God resides in, dwells in Jesus and his church, by means of his holy spirit. — John 10:38; 14:10,20; 17:11,21; Romans 8:9,10,11; 1 Corinthians 3:16; 2 Corinthians 6:16; 11:10; 13:5; Ephesians 3:17; 4:6,15; 1 Thessalonians 1:1; 2 Thessalonians 1:1; 2 Timothy 1:14; 1 John 3:24; 4:12,13; 2 John 1:9; 4:6.

None of this means that Jesus is Yahweh, or that the church is Yahweh, or that the church is Jesus, etc. Thus there is nothing in 2 Corinthians 5:19 that would lead us to believe that Jesus is Yahweh, or that Jesus was God Almighty in human form.

OVERDENKING:
Welk deel van het lichaam ben jij? Wat is jouw functie, jouw doel? Hoe zegen jij anderen in het lichaam van Christus? Wie is iemand in het lichaam die voor een groot deel ten dienste staat van anderen die behoefte hebben aan jouw aanmoedigingen en lof? Wie is iemand die zich verlaten en alleen voelt en het nodigt heeft dat jouw liefde getoond wordt?

GEBED:
Vader, ik dank u dat u mij een deel heeft gemaakt van iets dat zo kostbaar, zo geweldig is, zoals de lichamelijke aanwezigheid van de Heer. Alstublieft help ieder persoon in onze kerk zijn of haar gaven van dienstverlening te vinden en deze gaven zodanig te gebruiken zodat anderen geraakt worden door uw genade en dat het u glorie brengt. In Jezus' naam. Amen.

But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

    The Apostle Paul reminds us that God assigns our roles in the Body of Christ. Several principles interact with God's choice. First, be faithful in what God has given you to do -- until we are faithful in/with little things, he will not entrust us with big ones (Luke 16:10-13). Second, if we don't use what he has given us, it will be taken away (Matthew 25:14-30). Third, we reap what we sow -- sinful or irresponsible behavior can create consequences that limit the effectiveness of our service (Galations 6:7-8). Bottom line -- let's be faithful with what God has given us, let's serve him when given new opportunities, and let's honor him with our choices so that Satan (*) cannot use our failure to interfere with our service!

    Dear Father and LORD of heaven and earth, please help me see my opportunities to serve in your Kingdom. Please grow my effectiveness in your service so that I can bring you glory and be a blessing to the Body of Christ. In Jesus' name. Amen.

OVERDENKING:

De apostel Paulus herinnert ons eraan dat God ons rollen geeft in het Lichaam van Christus. Diverse uitgangspunten hebben een samenhang met Gods keuze. Ten eerste: wees trouw in het doen wat God je gegeven heeft - totdat wij trouw zijn in/met kleine dingen, zal hij ons geen grote dingen toevertrouwen. (Lukas 16:10-13) Ten tweede, als we geen gebruik maken van wat hij ons gegeven heeft, zal het worden weggenomen. (Mattheus 25:14-30) Ten derde, we oogsten wat we zaaien - zondig of onverantwoordelijk gedrag kan voor gevolgen zorgen die de effectiviteit van onze dienstverlening beperken. (Galaten 6:7-8) Tot slot - laten we trouw zijn met wat God ons gegeven heeft, laten we hem dienen wanneer ons nieuwe mogelijkheden gegeven worden en laten we hem eren met onze keuzes. Hierdoor kan Satan (=het kwaad) geen gebruik maken van ons falen om ons dienen te verstoren!

GEBED:

Vader en HEER van de hemel en de aarde, kunt u me helpen mijn kansen te zien om te dienen in uw Koninkrijk. Laat mijn effectiviteit alstublieft groeien ten gunste van u, zodat ik u glorie kan brengen en een zegen kan zijn voor het Lichaam van Christus. In Jezus' naam. Amen.

In Christus zijn en een nieuwe creatie worden

Indien iemand in Christus is, is hij een nieuwe creatie, de oude is heen gegaan, de nieuwe is gekomen.

2 Korinthiërs 5:17

God geeft ons de mogelijkheid om als nieuw in deze wereld rond te lopen.
Als God van de nieuwe dingen kan hij ons ook helemaal vernieuwen. Verder dan vergiffenis, verder dan wassing, maakt hij ons heilig door Jezus.
Nu er een nieuw jaar in aantocht is laat ons bij het afsluiten van het oude jaar ons leven overdenken. Laat ons onze oude slechte gewoonten afzweren en laat ons goede voornemens werkelijkheid worden.
Laat het nieuwe jaar een kans zijn om een springplank voor een vers leven te zijn.
Een nieuw leven voor God

Dank u god voor een Nieuw Jaar en een verse start.
Geef mij als het u belieft wijsheid en sterkte om u te dienen met onomkoopbaarheid en getrouwheid in het komende jaar.
Ik smeek u dat Uw werk in mijn leven zal gemaakt worden nu ik mij aanbied, mijn plannnen en mijn toekomst.
Ik hoop dat ik in Christus mag groeiën en een voorbeeld zal mogen zijn naar anderen, in Jezus mijn bemiddelaar en heer.

Horen bij Christus en één worden met Christus

Jezus is voor je zonden gestorven en daarom staat de rest van je leven in het teken van dankbaarheid. De 34-jarige predikant Hans Burger uit Franeker kent deze manier van denken door en door. Als gelovige heeft hij gezocht naar meer. ,,Ik moet dus heel erg dankbaar zijn. Dat heeft iets vermoeiends, iets oppervlakkigs.''

Vandaag promoveert hij aan de vrijgemaakt-gereformeerde Theologische Universiteit over 'in Christus zijn', zoals Paulus en Johannes in de Bijbel het leven als gelovige typeren. ,,Ik ben ermee aan de gang gegaan vanuit een gevoel van malaise. Wat kan ik nog met de gereformeerde theologie?'' De predikant verwijst naar de identiteitscrisis en het weg-met-onsgevoel in zijn kerken, de vrijgemaakt-gereformeerde.

Burger heeft onderzocht hoe de bredere reformatorische traditie het 'zijn in Christus' heeft ingevuld. Daarvoor analyseerde hij het werk van de puritein John Owen (1616-1683) en de invloedrijke Nederlandse theoloog Herman Bavinck (1854-1921). ,,De gemeenschap met Christus is in hun theologie heel belangrijk. In de Gereformeerde Kerken (vrijgemaakt) zijn we dat echt kwijtgeraakt. Alle nadruk is komen te liggen op Gods beloften. De vrees voor subjectivisme - dat gelovigen houvast zoeken in hun eigen gevoelsleven -, heeft geleid tot een tekort aan aandacht voor de doorwerking van het evangelie in het concrete leven van mensen. Verzet tegen moderne theologen als Wiersinga, die de verzoeningsleer afschreef, leidde ook tot eenzijdige nadruk op de verzoening in Christus.''

Wedergeboorte moet meer begrepen worden vanuit de verbondenheid met Christus: één worden met Christus en daardoor nieuw leven krijgen.''

Paulus en Johannes geven in de Bijbel ieder een eigen invulling aan 'zijn in Christus', concludeert Burger. ,,Bij Paulus is het een soort van tussenfase: je hoort bij Christus, je bent met hem gestorven, maar nog niet helemaal met hem verlost en in heerlijkheid. Je bent nog ver van Hem in den vreemde, want Jezus moet nog terugkomen. Bij Johannes gaat het om een intieme verbondenheid: Christus woont in ons en wij in Hem.''
