Focussen op Christus

De nieuwste diocesane bisschop van de Church of England, Steven Croft, heeft de kerken in zijn nieuw boek Jesus’ People: What the Church should do next opgeroepen zich opnieuw te focussen op Christus, als het kompas dat de juiste weg wijst op de veranderde terreinen in de wereld.

Er moet gebouwd worden aan de kerk maar dat zou moeten gebeuren uit het gebed, bijbelstudies en gemeenschap. daarbij moeten de ogen steeds gericht zijn op Jezus. "'Jezus-mensen' zullen tot denken gezet worden wanneer ze zowel de rol van Jezus als dat van de kerk in de hedendaagse samenleving heroverwegen,"

Be an Encourager

Discouragement often knocks on the door of the lonely, sick and elderly. For
decades Hope interceded for her family, church and community. Through her
strong witness many came to Christ. Now Hope sits alone in her living room
lamenting that her life is unfruitful. Poor health and several falls prevent
her from attending church. Few from the congregation call.

"I don¹t know why the Lord doesn¹t take me home," she says. "I'm no good to
Him any more."

Encouraging the Hopes of the world is a significant part of our work for
God. The first gift we can offer them is an empathetic ear. They often need
to unload their painful feelings. Sometimes the simple act of expressing
their thoughts lightens their darkness. Being a kind, nonjudgmental listener
is an offering believers can give one another.

In her prime, Hope prayed for, called and visited many. "Now I'm alone and
everyone has forgotten me," she says.

"Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of
Christ" (Galatians 6:2, NIV).

After listening, raise the focus upwards by reminding the person of their
royal position.

"God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms
in Christ Jesus" (Ephesians 2:6).

Tell of His unconditional affection and the promise of His continual
presence. Read Scripture and pray together. Allow a spiritual bond to
develop. This restores the person's sense of belonging to the body of
Christ.

Paul expressed this in Romans 1:11,12: "I long to see you so that I may
impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong ‹ that is, that you and
I may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith."

Even God's heroes become discouraged. Elijah, a miracle man, was so
miserable he wanted to die. An angel came, cooked him a nourishing meal and
told him to lie down and rest (1 Kings 19:1-8). What kindness the angel
showed the depressed prophet.

The angel's actions demonstrate the practical side of being an encourager.
Simple acts of kindness sooth despairing souls and remind them they're
loved. It's only human to grow old, tired, hungry and lonely. James wrote of
Elijah, "[He] was a man just like us" (James 5:17).

Christians often don't allow for human weakness. We consider the high points
of our faith journey and believe we should always live on those
mountaintops. Some may even believe that becoming disheartened, discouraged
or depressed is a sin.  An encourager dispels that myth.

Companionship

In the Christadelphian Waymark of December 2008 you can find an article on Companionship.

Our primary relationship is with God, He is our Father and if we live according to the light of His word, then we have fellowship with Him. Fellowship with others who share the same precious faith comes as a product of fellowship with God.

... it is not good for one to seek isolation from those who share the same precious faith. But there are many who live in isolation through circumstance beyond their control, or who go into isolation because circumstances dictate that they must. Those in that position need the support and encouragement of all the other members of the body.

But if we do live alone then we still have that sure knowledge that God is ever mindful of His children. We can all read books about the Truth, read magazines, read exhortations, listen to tapes and in many do things that help to make us feel part of the one body. A husband and wife can support each other, but if companionship of other brethren and sisters is present, then this is a great blessing from God.

If we do have the companionship of brethren and sisters, let us then be grateful for it and make the most of our time with each other. Let the focus be upon building each other up and encouraging each other while we can. Let us never take this benefit for granted or neglect meeting together. Let us be givers and not takers, workers and not hinderers, supporters not complainers. Let us be grateful to God for companionship, yet content if need be to be dwell alone. Though we truly are never alone, for He is always with us.

Advent een tijd voor reflectie

Een burgerlijk jaar loopt weer naar haar einde toe. Verjaardagen zijn gevierd geworden en weer konden velen vast stellen dat alles zo voorbijgevlogen was.

Vele kerkgemeenschappen hebben een adventsperiode geopend. Een tijd van overdenking en van voorbereiding voor het nieuwe dat gaat komen.

Een tijd voor reflectie en om eens stil te staan bij de vraag wat het doel van het leven is, of waar wij naar toe willen gaan.

Waar gaat u achter? Wat is voor u belangrijk? Wat wenst u? Wat zijn de zaken waarvan u kan genieten of graag zou van genieten? Welke plaatsen wil u zeker bezoeken of waar wil u vertoeven?

Wij willen veel doen en soms denken wij wel eens dat wij niets gedaan kunnen krijgen. soms lijken wij slechts branden te blussen in plaats van echt boeiende dingen te verwezenlijken.


Wij moeten tegen zo veel optornen, onze tijd verdelen om koetjes en kalfjes aan te kunnen. Zo veel wereldse dingen omringen ons dat men zich kan afvragen of er nog wel tijd is voor het eigen innerlijke. Waar kan het geestelijke tegenover al dat wereldse staan?

Kan de mens in dat alles nog tijd vinden om diegene te leren kennen die er reeds van in het begin was en aan wij wij alles te danken hebben? en als wij de Vader van al de vaders kennen, kunnen en durven wij dan ook tijd voor Hem uit trekken?

Men kan de wereld zo lief hebben dat men er ook zijn hart aan  verliest. Men kan helemaal verankerd geraken aan het tijdsgebondene en deze wereld of aan de dingen in de wereld! Maar dan moeten wij toch even terugblikken en denken aan wat God ons ter waarschuwing heeft
gegeven. Als iemand de wereld liefheeft, is de liefde van de Vader niet in hem. Velen laten geen plaats meer in hun hart voor de Liefde van God. Sommigen willen God wel beschuldigen voor al die moeilijkheden die hen over komen, of de rampen en oorlogen die plaats grijpen. Maar zij vergeten dat deze niet van God komen maar van de wereld zelf. Het zijn de mensen zelf die hun verantwoordelijkheden niet opnemen of zelf de nodige liefde voor de ander niet kunnen opbrengen. Door verwaarlozing van natuur en medeschepselen brengen ze de wereld in on evenwicht en gaan er dingen verkeerd lopen. Begeerlijkheid van het vlees, gulzigheid, argwaan en jaloersheid veroorzaken in de kleine kring reeds voor problemen. Door lust , trots en hovaardij met de begeerte van macht en geld worden mensen vijanden van elkaar.


Jo 2:15-16) (NB) :15   hebt niet de wereld lief noch wat in de wereld omgaat; als iemand de wereld liefheeft, woont de liefde voor de Vader niet in hem, 16  omdat al wat in de wereld omgaat:


Met de Advent moeten wij onze ogen proberen te richten op het Betere dat voor iedereen ter beschikking kan liggen. Onze ogen moeten beschermd worden en het juiste Licht leren opvangen. Een groot deel van de advertenties die onder onze ogen komen is gericht op het passionele en onze verlangens naar vleselijke dingen, welke deel uit maken van de oude natuur van de mens.

Zij die het aankomende Licht willen erkennen hebben betere verwachtingen en kunnen er op aan dat de boreling die zij willen herdenken niet zo maar een kind van de aarde was, maar een lang geleden beloofde Mens die meer heeft kunnen doen en zijn dan eenieder van ons.
Het is een super voorbeeld dat wij in herinnering willen brengen.
Alhoewel die schrijnwerkers zoon er maar uit zag als een heel eenvoudig mens, was Hij diegene naar wie wij echt moeten uit kijken. Jezus komst mag wel degelijk echt iets zijn om je op voor te bereiden en een feest voor te vieren. Indien je dit wenst ter herinnering te brengen op 25 december, maak het dan zeker dat je dat in je gedachten wil opnemen.

Sta er dan ook even bij stil wat Jezus van Nazareth voor ons gedaan heeft en in welke mate wij er ons verdere leven niet zouden moeten laten door bepalen?

Jezus nam in Zijn leven de tijd voor de zwakkeren, de zieken, de hulpbehoevenden, de gevangenen, maar ook voor Zijn Vader, die Hij ook trachtte kenbaar te maken aan de anderen. Hij was zich er bewust van dat zijn tijd op de aarde slechts zeer beperkt was en focuste daarom op de meer belangrijke zaken dan de wereldse. Hij richtte zich op dingen die vruchtbaar leken te zijn.

Richten wij ons op dagelijkse futiliteiten of wereldse dingen? Of
willen wij verder kijken en naar de toekomst iets blijvend opbouwen?
