Christmas, Saturnalia and the birth of Jesus

The days are shortening already for some a time.  It always becomes quicker dark and there is now not many light during the day. 

Over a few days a celebration would take place in many houselholds, by which trees are decorated and one not only in the tree extra lights are brought in, but also around the houses.  Extra light and atmossphere bringers can be welcome now.  But we must be conscious that we focus us rightly. 


Christmas as generally celebrated today is one of many carry-overs from Roman Catholicism
that survived the Reformation. Historian Will Durant reminds us that Roman Catholicism grew out of the merger between paganism and Christianity that took place under Constantine in the early 300s. Commenting upon the resulting "Christianization" of the Roman Empire, which Reconstructionists such as Coalition on Revival (COR) director Jay Grimstead look back to fondly as a model of what they hope to achieve, Durant wrote:

Paganism survived...in the form of ancient rites and customs condoned...by an often indulgent Church....Statues of Isis and Horus were renamed Mary and Jesus...the Saturnalia [Festival of Saturn in celebration of the winter solstice] was replaced by Christmas celebration...[ I]ncense, lights, flowers, processions, vestments...which had pleased the people in older [pagan] cults were domesticated and cleansed in the Ritual of the Church....

In spite of its pagan/Roman Catholic origins and crass commercialization, we can perhaps rejoice that Christmas annually brings a reminder of the Savior's birth. Unfortunately, however, Christmas festivities generally perpetuate the confusion concerning who Jesus Christ really is, why He came, and what He accomplished.
This is not surprising, considering the misunderstandings even among His own disciples at the first advent--and the far greater confusion that the Bible warns will precede His second coming.

 

Christmas is only a few weeks away, and it's meant to be a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, but how many people celebrate Christmas in ignorance of who Jesus actually is?
I'm sure you know who Jesus is, but download it anyway and forward it to your friends who might not know. This is a great time of the year to tell people about God and his plan for the earth as many are often more willing to listen because of all the Christmas celebrations going on around them. Use every opportunity possible to make the saving name of Jesus known to those around you this Christmas!

Kerstmis, Saturnalia en de geboorte van Jezus

De dagen zijn al een tijdje aan het verkorten. Het wordt steeds vlugger donker en er is niet veel licht over dag.

Over enkele dagen gaat men een feest vieren waarbij bomen worden versierd en men niet enkel in de boom extra lichtjes brengt maar ook rond de huizen. Extra licht en sfeerbrengers kunnen nu wel welkom zijn.
Maar wij moeten bewust zijn dat wij ons juist focussen.

Kerstmis zoals het vandaag gevierd wordt in onze contreien is een algemeen overblijfsel van  vele Romeins katholicise aangelegenheden welke de Reformatie overleefde en waarbij ook nog tradities van het Germaanse Rijk werden overgenomen.

 Historicus Will Durant herinnert ons dat Romeins katholicisme uit de fusie tussen heidendom en christendom groeide die plaatsgreep onder Constantinus in de vroege jaren 300.

Durant schreef:

Heidendom overleefde. ..in de vorm van oude riten en gewoonten. ..bij een dikwijls toegeeflijke Kerk. ...Beelden van Isis en Horus werden herdoopt in Maria en Jezus. ..de Saturnalia of Uitspatting [Festival van Saturnus voor de viering van de winterzonnewende] werd vervangen door Kerstmis viering. ..[1] wierook, lichten, bloemen, processies, liturgische gewaden. ..welke  de mensen hadden behaagd in oudere [heidense] culturen werden verhuiselijkt en 'gereinigd' in het Ritueel van de Kerk. ...

Ondanks zijn heidense/rooms-katholieke oorsprongen en onbeschofte commercialisering kunnen wij ons misschien verheugen dat Kerstmis jaarlijks een herinnering aan de geboorte van de Redder brengt. Jammerlijk, nochtans, vereeuwigen Kerstmis feesten algemeen de verwarring aangaande die Jezus Christus echt is, waarom Hij kwam en wat Hij bereikte. Dit is verrassend genoeg niet, in Overweging de misverstanden zelfs onder Zijn eigen volgelingen tijdens de eerste komst -- en volgens de Bijbelse waarschuwing de grotere verwarring die aan Zijn tweede komst zal voorafgaan .

Kerstmis is nog maar enkele weken van ons af en het zou dan een viering van de geboorte van Jezus Christus moeten betekenen, maar hoe veel mensen vieren Kerstmis in onwetendheid van wie Jezus eigenlijk is?

Ik ben zeker dat u weet wie Jezus is, maar download het onderstaande document toch maar en vertoon het aan uw vrienden die het misschien niet weten. Dit is een geweldige tijd van het jaar om mensen over God en zijn plan voor de aarde te vertellen nu velen dikwijls gewilliger zijn om te luisteren wegens alle Kerstmis vieringen  die verder rond hen door gaan. Gebruik iedere gelegenheid die mogelijk is om de reddende naam van Jezus bekend te maken naar diegenen die deze Kerstmis rond u zijn!

Herziene Statenvertaling beschikbaar voor het publiek

Vandaag komt de Herziene Statenvertaling uit, een nieuwe uitgave die de aloude Statenvertaling weer bereikbaar wil maken. De reacties vanuit de kerken zijn verdeeld.

Sommigen beweren dat deze minder betrouwbaar zou zijn dan de originele Statenvertaling van 400 jaar geleden maar ons lijkt dat onterrecht. Reeds enkele jaren gebruiken wij de Herziene Statenvertaling teksten zoals zij klaargestoomd werden en hebben ze op dit platform en andere van onze webstes reeds gebruikt.

Er zijn er die zelfs beweren, dat de HSV een list van de duivel zou zijn,. Op dat vlak vrezen wij persoonlijk niets daar wij weten dat de duivel het kwaad is dat in ons zelf is, maar diegenen die geloven in een buitengewoon kwaaddoend wezen zien daar heel wat anders in.

Bijbeltekst: uit de Statenvertaling (1637), de Herziene Statenvertaling (2010) en de Nieuwe Bijbelvertaling (2004). Misschien helpt de vergelijking je een oordeel te vormen.

Romeinen 8:7-9

Statenvertaling “Daarom dat het bedenken des vleses vijandschap is tegen God; want het onderwerpt zich der wet Gods niet; want het kan ook niet. En die in het vlees zijn, kunnen Gode niet behagen. NBV “Onze eigen wil staat vijandig tegenover God, want hij onderwerpt zich niet aan zijn wet en is daar ook niet toe in staat. Wie zich door zijn eigen wil laat leiden, kan God niet behagen. Maar u leeft niet zo. U laat u leiden door de Geest, want de Geest van God woont in u. Iemand die zich niet laat leiden door de Geest van Christus behoort Christus ook niet toe.”

Israel Antiquities Authority

Last month the Reshut haAtiqot (Israel Antiquities Authority, IAA) celebrated its 20^th anniversary. As part of its 20^th anniversary celebrations, the Israel Antiquities Authority announced its plan to digitize the complete remains of the Dead Sea Scrolls to make them available to the public on line. In order to do this the IAA has teamed up with Google's Israel Research and Design Centre in a $3.5 million project.

Verbum Domini

In het derde onderdee van Paus Benedctus zijn post-synodale apostolische exhortatie Verbum Domini [het Woord van de Heer], verbum Mundo (Werelds Woord), herinnert hij de lezers van "de plicht van Christenen om het Woord van God in de wereld waarin zij leven en werken, aan te kondigen ". Paus Benedictus schrijft over de universele missie van de Kerk om het Woord van God uit te spreiden en van het belang om Gospelse principes in de seculiere wereld te brengen.

Pope Benedict's promulgation of Verbum Domini, the document in which he bestows on the Church the rich fruit of the twelfth Synod of Bishops (2008), which reflected on the Word of God in the life and mission of the Church. >
