Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island

Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island, the nation's oldest synagogue, will no longer be in the hands of the local congregation but rather under the control of the nation's first Jewish congregation, in New York, Shearith Israel.

A federal appeals court in Boston overturned a lower court's decision that put control of the building and a set of bells worth millions of dollars in the hands of the congregation that worships there.

The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decided on Wednesday that Shearith Israel is the rightful owner of the bells and the synagogue.

An attorney for the Newport congregation said he was disappointed with the panel's ruling.

"We are reviewing our legal options on behalf of the Touro Synagogue and Jeshuat Israel, the Congregation that has prayed there for over a century,"

 attorney Gary Naftalis said.

Touro Synagogue holds an important place in the history of the nation's commitment to religious liberty. In 1790, George Washington visited Touro, and then sent a letter to the congregation pledging America's commitment to religious liberty.

The synagogue, dedicated in 1763, is a national historic site that draws thousands of visitors each year.
By 1820, all of the Jews had left Newport, and Congregation Shearith Israel became trustee of Touro. It was reopened later that century as Jews began to move back to the city.

The dispute over ownership began when the Newport congregation, which was struggling with money, formed a plan to establish an endowment by selling the bells to the Museum of Fine Arts. The New York congregation objected, arguing that the sale would violate religious law and would be akin to selling a "birthright."

The Vatican really doesn't want Belgian Catholics to perform euthanasia

In May the Broeders van Liefde (Brothers of Charity) in Boechout by Antwerp, announced it would allow doctors to perform euthanasia at its 15 psychiatric hospitals in Belgium, one of only two countries — along with the Netherlands — where doctors are legally allowed to kill people with mental health problems, at their request.
In reaction to that proposed idea Pope Francis I ordered them stop offering euthanasia in its psychiatric hospitals and warned them if they wanted to continue their idea they would be expelled from the Roman Catholic Church.

The Christian brothers would not offer euthanasia so easily but would have it only performed if there would be “no reasonable treatment alternatives” and that such requests would be considered with “the greatest caution.” for the first time it is that Catholic brethren express euthanasia to be an ordinary medical practice that falls under the physician’s therapeutic freedom and that the people running a hospital, psychiatric or medical centrum should listen to the medics.

But it seems that the Belgian charity’s administrative headquarters in Rome are not pleased with their Belgian confraters. They issued already a statement in May, arguing that allowing euthanasia “goes against the basic principles” of the Catholic Church, but it looks like the brethren in Belgium want to put foot.
Some weeks further now we still do not know what the the Belgium charity is going to do.

Mattias De Vriendt, a spokesman for the Belgium charity, said the charity’s hospitals had received requests from patients seeking euthanasia recently but could not say whether any procedures had been performed.

The vast majority of patients seeking euthanasia in Belgium have a fatal illness like cancer or a degenerative disease. While the number of people euthanized for psychiatric reasons accounts for only about 3 per cent of Belgium’s yearly 4,000 euthanasia deaths, there has been a threefold increase in the past decade.

Critics have previously raised concerns about Belgium’s liberal approach to euthanasia while advocates say that people with mental health illnesses should be granted the same autonomy as those with physical diseases.

Ken jij een Jeshua-ist

Vermoedelijk weet jij wel wie of wat een Christen is. Naast christenen die zich zo noemen vinden wij ook Messiaansen, waarvan er bij zijn die zich als Jood aanschouwen terwijl anderen zich als Christen aanschouwen. Vreemd genoeg is er bij die Messiaansen ook een stroming die de Drie-eenheid aanhoudt. Vreemd genoeg zelfs bij een groep die zich Messiaanse Joden noemt.

Bij Jeshua-isten is er geen plaats voor de drie-eenheid. Vermoedelijk is die naam Jeshua-ist vreemd. Het is een naam om de volgelingen van de Joodse Nazareen Jeshua, in het Nederlands ook Jeshoea geschreven, aan te duiden. Als volgelingen van de rebbe Jeshua houden zij er aan om werkelijk de leerstellingen van die Zoon van David na te leven.

Op de site van de Jeshua-isten kan u meer informatie vinden over deze groepering die het geloof in Jezus Christus wil verspreiden en de mensen het verschil wil aantonen tussen de algemeen Katholiek of Protestants 'Kerkeklijke' en 'Bijbelse' Christus.

Mosoel heroverd maar humanitaire toestand blijft alarmerend

De coalitie mag dan aankondigen dat Mosoel heroverd is, de humanitaire toestand blijft, door het maandenlange conflict dat de stad verwoestte, alarmerend. Na eerst volop ingezet te hebben op spoedchirurgie, past AZG haar activiteiten aan om beter in te spelen op de dringende noden van de bevolking.

De AZG-teams blijven de vele gevallen van ondervoeding aanpakken bij voornamelijk kinderen jonger dan één jaar. Naar schatting werden tussen 12.000 en 30.000 mensen gewond tijdens het conflict. In totaal voorziet AZG de nodige medische zorg aan de inwoners van Mosoel in acht projecten rond de stad, gaande van moeder- en kindzorg, mentale gezondheidszorg tot post-operatieve zorg.

Een kijk op de Thora

Op het web kan u sinds enkele dagen een site vinden die naar de Joodse gemeenschap de reden wil voorleggen om uit te kijken naar de Messias in deze dagen.

Naar Niet-Joden, Christenen, anders gelovigen en niet-gelovigen wil de site Jeshua-ists de Wetsbepalingen van de Allerhoogste Schepper voor leggen. Hiertoe kijkt Immanuel Verbondskind naar de Thora of Tora / Torah die bestaat uit vijf delen of boeken, oorspronkelijk in het Hebreeuws geschreven.

Mits er in onze contreien ook Joodse afstammelingen wonen die niet meer zo Hebreeuws taalkundig zijn is het mooi dat er nu voor hen en voor geïnteresseerden een mogelijkheid wordt geboden om enkele Nederlandse vertalingen uit Joods perspectief onder ogen te krijgen.

Op de twee sites (Immanuel Verbondskind + Jeshua-ists) kan men de volgorde en namen van de boeken vinden volgens de traditionele Hebreeuwse overlevering.

Vlamingen en Nederlanders mogen dan wel gewoon zijn aan de Nederlandse Katholiek-Protestantse titels die op de Griekse en Latijnse vertaling gebaseerd zijn. Het is best om ook de betekenis van die oorspronkelijke betiteling van de Hebreeuwse Geschriften te kennen.
Bij de vertalingen op bovengenoemde sites worden aan de Bijbelboeken van het Oude Testament de naam gegeven die enigszins de inhoud van het desbetreffende boek weergeeft.
Deze namen zijn via het Latijn uiteindelijk in de Nederlandse Bijbel terechtgekomen.
(In sommige talen, zoals in het Duits, spreekt men van het ‘Eerste boek van Mozes’, ‘het Tweede boek van Mozes’, etc.)
