Paul Verhoeven in gesprek met remonstrantse theologen over Jezus

Wat kerken maar moeilijk lukt, kreeg filmmaker Paul Verhoeven wel voor elkaar. Paul Verhoeven vestigde met zijn boek 'Jezus van Nazareth' ook buiten de kerk de aandacht op Jezus. Gaat het Paul Verhoeven in zijn boek om de vraag naar de historische Jezus.   In het onlangs verschenen boek ‘Een mens vol van Geest'  onder redactie van de remonstrantse predikanten Johan Goud en Bert Dicou gaat het  over Jezus zoals hij nu wordt ervaren : welke Jezus-beelden in de kunst van vroeger en nu, in de literatuur en in de popcultuur zijn aansprekend?  

Op 10 januari 2009  slaan de Remonstranten een brug tussen heden en verleden. Dan treedt Paul Verhoeven in gesprek met remonstrantse theologen over Jezus: Wie was hij en wie is hij? De antwoorden op deze vragen zijn soms met allerlei taboe's omgeven. Niet alles kan zomaar gezegd worden over Jezus. Op 10 januari zal er vrijmoedig gesproken worden over Jezus.  Want daarin lijken Paul Verhoeven en Remonstranten misschien wel een beetje op elkaar.

A New Year

Tonight many in the world about us will be wishing each other a ‘Happy New Year’. Already various writers are predicting what new technology will be available, what will happen to financial markets and housing in the light of the global downturn, or in world events to name but a few. Individuals are thinking about their New Year resolutions, what they want to achieve, hope to do etc. It appears from some health sites some people intend to lose weight, become fitter or give up smoking. The government sets its targets for legislation and policy for the coming year; the list could go on.

 

At the same time as considering the New Years resolutions a post mortem will be carried out over what was intended for this last year and what was achieved or why those resolutions were not met. But the truth of the matter is that nobody can predict the future and human being have limited influence upon what will or will not happen.

 

Certainly in this day and age many will be going into the New Year with worries and concerns about what it will hold for them financially or in regard to strife and social unrest, war, ill health or one of the many problems that face both individuals and society at large. The world has indeed many understandable misgivings about what the future may hold. The world if we but take a candid look has many frightening features, but these should not deter us!

 

It is no wonder that fear lurks at every corner when we come to understand and appreciate from scripture what is coming upon this earth, what true happiness really is and how it can be found. A man may inherit property or money, he may gain a new job, achieve many things, but in reality these are but transient pleasures. With responsibility comes concerns and wealth is at best transient. Temporal gain brings little lasting happiness in itself.

 

If a man gain much and manages to keep it, how long will it give happiness? A year or two, ten years, fifty years maybe, but however long, sorrows will most certainly come and the shadow of death lies over all. Now Jesus said:

 

“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” Mark 8:36

 

In the scriptures we have a new beginning depicted to us in the opening chapters of Genesis and the Bible ends in Revelation with a new beginning. In Genesis the earth is without form and void, its surface covered with water, full of darkness and lifeless. The earth in this age is full of darkness, its surface covered with the heaving turbulent waters of the wicked casting up mire and mud, it is a world that is spiritually lifeless.

 

A new beginning will shortly dawn and the Lord our God will create something new in the earth and that newness of life spoken of in Revelation will spring forth:

 

“..he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb... … there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads.”

 

So no futile new years resolutions for us maybe, but a continual resolving each week to seek Yahweh and His ways, diligently preparing for the return of the Lord Jesus.

 

How very transient are the “happy new years” for humanity, for apart from Yahweh it can be no different. Thus David prayed, “teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts to wisdom.”

 

Let us go into this New Year remembering that our calendar really centres upon the Jewish New Year in September and we work to Yahweh’s timescale not our own.

 

There is the promise of many “Happy New Years” to come, an eternity, but only if we seek out that which his of true and lasting value. Indeed Paul writes:

 

“Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. 1Timothy 6:6-8

 

We know that we are living in the last days, the final time of the end. If this should bring the day of resurrection, and we pray that it will, then may that day  find us exhibiting a faithful attitude of joyful obedience to the will and Word of God. Let that day find us watching, waiting and prepared.

Vertrouwen Amerikaan in godsdienst neemt af

Het vertrouwen dat Amerikanen hebben in religie neemt af, blijkt uit een opiniepeiling onder 1009 burgers boven de 18 jaar.

Van de ondervraagden zegt 27 procent dat de invloed van godsdienst op het openbare leven in de VS toeneemt, zo meldde het Duitse persbureau Idea deze week. Daarentegen heeft 67 procent de indruk dat religie juist aan betekenis inboet. Opiniepeilers zien deze trend de laatste drie jaar. In 2005 was nog de helft van de ondervraagden van mening dat religie van grote betekenis is voor het openbare leven. De laatste keer dat een meerderheid van Amerikaanse burgers (71 procent) aangaf dat godsdienst van grote betekenis is, was kort na de terroristische aanslagen op 11 september 2001.

Van de ondervraagden denkt 53 procent dat godsdienst „alle of ten minste de meeste problemen” van een maatschappij kan oplossen. Bij regelmatige kerkgangers ligt dit percentage op 82, bij mensen die nooit naar de kerk gaan op 27.

Verder blijkt dat bij het ouder worden het geloof aan betekenis wint. Van de ondervraagden in de leeftijd van 18 tot 44 jaar meent 44 procent dat godsdienst antwoorden geeft op maatschappelijke vragen. In de groep 35 tot 54 jaar ligt dit percentage op 52 en bij de 55-plus groep op 60 procent.

Meer training voor werkers met Jesus-film

De leiding van het Jesus Film Project wil zich meer toeleggen op het geven van trainingen aan mensen die met de Jesus-film werken. Zegt Scott Pendleton, die de dagelijkse leiding van het project heeft.

De Jesus-film, een initiatief van Campus Crusade for Christ, wordt gezien als ’s werelds belangrijkste evangelisatiemiddel. Miljarden mensen hebben de film al gezien. Campus Crusade denkt dat meer dan 225 miljoen mensen als gevolg van de film tot bekering zijn gekomen.

De film is inmiddels in ruim 1050 talen vertaald. Campus Crusade for Christ heeft nog zeker 500 talen op en lijstje staan waarin men de film ook wil aanbieden. “Maar dat zal allemaal minder snel gaan dan we wel wensen”, zegt Pendleton. “In 400 van die talen wordt nog gewerkt aan een vertaling van het Bijbelboek Lucas. We zijn nog niet zo ver dat we de Jesus-film al in die talen kunnen vertalen.”

Pendleton zegt dat het werken met de Jesus-film nog efficiënter kan als de mensen die ermee aan de slag gaan, daar goed op voorbereid worden. Daarom wil men meer gaan inzetten op training, zowel van individuele werkers als van organisaties die de Jesus-film gebruiken.

Één miljoen bijbels voor China

De oecumenische broedergemeenschap Taizé wil tegemoetkomen aan de noden van Chinese christenen en zal daarom in China 1 miljoen bijbels laten drukken. Dat heeft Taizé-overste Frère Alois vanavond in Brussel bekendgemaakt. In de Belgische hoofdstad zijn dezer dagen ruim 40.000 jongeren bijeen om met de Taizé-broeders te bidden voor eenheid en vrede.

Er zullen 800.000 boeken met daar het Nieuwe Testament en de Psalmen worden gedrukt en 200.000 complete bijbels. Het drukken van deze editie zal plaatsvinden in Nanjing. Vanuit deze Chinese stad worden de boeken gedurende 2009 in opeenvolgende uitgaven verspreid over het land. In hetzelfde jaar zal Taizé het Bijbelse werk van de protestantse kerk in China ook ondersteunen.

"Het Woord van God maakt ons één, ondanks alle verdeeldheid. Ook verenigt het ons ondanks de landsgrenzen met hen die ver van ons vandaan wonen. Wij zijn blij om een duidelijke blijk van eenheid met de christenen in China te geven", aldus Frère Alois.

De kosten van de druk worden opgebracht door een door Taizé georganiseerde geldinzamelingsactie die 'Operatie Hoop' heet.
