God's Special Gift

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

What do you associate with Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries and lots of other special occasions? If you said "gifts," 99 percent of the rest of our society would probably agree with you. Gifts are one of the ways most of us show we care about someone.

But no one has ever given a gift that is as special as the one God gave. This gift came through His Son, Jesus Christ. Let's take a closer look at what God's Word says about this gift.

What Does God Say?

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus (Romans 3:23-26).

My Thoughts

God's gift is free, but it's not cheap. It cost the blood of His Son, Jesus Christ. It was Christ's blood that redeemed us. The word redeemed means "to buy back." It's used to describe paying a ransom for someone's release. Sin had held us captive. It held us under its control (Romans 7:14). But Jesus paid the ransom price and set us free.

This allowed God to be both "just and the justifier." For God to have ignored our sins would make Him unjust. He would be violating His own laws. But Jesus became a propitiation through His blood. The word propitiation means "to satisfy." To maintain God's justice, the Law had to be met. Jesus satisfied that Law through His death.

My Part

Take a piece of paper and divide it in half. On one half, label it "Mankind" and list all the ways people try to pay for their sins. On the other half, list The way God has paid for our sins. Which way have you chosen?

BRUSSEL (KerkNet/The Times/Ha’aretz) – Rachel Elior, een Israëlische professor joodse filosofie van de Hebreeuwse Universiteit in Jeruzalem, zorgt voor opschudding in de archeologische wereld met een nieuwe studie waarin gesteld wordt dat de 930 rollen die in 1947 aan de Dode Zee ontdekt werden niet aan de Essenen, maar wel aan verdreven sadduceeën moeten toegeschreven worden. Bij de rollen in Qumran werd ook een kostbare Hebreeuwse Bijbel teruggevonden van 300 voor Christus. Met deze theorie knoopt zij opnieuw aan bij de bewering van sommige archeologen dat de Dode Zeerollen aanvankelijk in Jeruzalem geschreven werden. “De rollen behoorden tot de tempel. Zij werden later naar de Dode Zee overgebracht om ze te beschermen.”

Sadduceeën waren een politieke en religieuze groepering waarvan het ontstaan teruggaat tot de tijd van koning Salomon. Deze joodse priesters, die nauwe banden onderhielden met de machthebbers in Jeruzalem, stonden traditioneel in voor de eredienst in de tempel. Na de verwoesting van de tempel van Jeruzalem in 70 na Christus verdween de groepering van het toneel. Elior baseert haar stelling op de vaststelling dat in de joodse noch in de christelijke literatuur ernstige historische aanwijzingen zijn voor het bestaan van de Essenen, een sekte van celibatair levende mannen die volgens strikte regels leefden. De verwijzing naar de Essenen in het geschrift ‘De joodse oorlog’ van de joods-Romeinse geschiedschrijver Flavius Josephus is wellicht geromantiseerd en dit is vooral ook een getuigenis van veel latere datum. Elior noemt het ondenkbaar dat duizenden mensen in strijd met de joodse wet leefden en dat niemand daarover zou geschreven hebben: “De Essenen hebben nooit bestaan. Zij zijn een uitvinding van Josephus.”

Thank you for the mentors and examples

Dear God, Thank you for the people you have placed in my life as mentors to look up to as examples. I pray that you would help me to live life in such a way, and to grow stronger in faith and more spiritually mature, so that I may be a godly example to others. Show me if there is someone who needs for me to be a mentor. Minister through me to guide and instruct that person, to offer spiritual nurture and encouragement. Please forgive me for my sins and shortcomings; for the times I did not use the opportunities you gave me to the fullest and best. Thank you for allowing me to start afresh today. In Jesus' name, amen.

Tweede Calvijn-debat

Tijdens een debatavond over de intolerante Calvijn, dinsdagavond in Rotterdam door 550 mensen bezocht, vonden de sprekers dat Calvijn recht gedaan moet worden in zijn tijd. "Wie vanuit hedendaagse opvattingen Calvijn beoordeelt, maakt zich schuldig aan anachronisme.” Dit meldt het Reformatorisch Dagblad.

SGP-Tweede Kamerlid Van der Staaij zag bij Calvijn een goede voedingsbodem voor tolerantie, mede door erkenning van burgerlijke vrijheden en machtenscheiding. "Calvijn bepleitte geen oeverloze tolerantie. Wel was hij jurist en realist genoeg om wetgevers ruimte en flexibiliteit te bieden."

Het viel Van der Staaij op dat christelijke politici wordt verweten "sterke opvattingen van goed en kwaad"  te hebben, maar liberalen hebben die ook, "alleen zij verstoppen ze als neutraal. Vroeger was tolerantie begrensd door algemene waarden van het christendom, waar toch ook de VVD uit is voortgekomen. Liberalen houden nu alleen de seculiere opvatting over goed en kwaad als norm over."

Hoe tolerant zijn wij vandaag voor Calvijn?

Belangrijker dan de vraag naar de tolerantie van Calvijn is de vraag naar de huidige tolerantie voor Calvijn, betoogde Kees van der Staaij dinsdag op de Calvijndebatavond in Rotterdam.

Wie betoogt dat er een rechte lijn loopt van Calvijn naar een totalitaire intolerantie, slaat de plank mis. Daarentegen zijn er juist wezenlijke elementen in zijn staatkundige opvattingen die een goede voedingsbodem vormen voor gezonde tolerantie, voor de erkenning van burgerlijke vrijheden en rechten en voor scheiding van de machten. Voorbeelden daarvan zijn Calvijns nadruk op de dienstbaarheid van de overheid, de onderscheiden positie van kerk en staat, de erkenning van het individuele geweten en het vrijwillig dienen van God met het hart.

In de praktijk blijkt Calvijn ook steeds oog te hebben voor de menselijke maat. Dat is de tolerante Calvijn die gematigdheid tegenover rigorisme stelt. Zo waarschuwt hij overheden niet alleen voor slappe toegeeflijkheid, maar ook voor overmatige strengheid, die meer verwondt dan geneest.

Calvijn was geen pleitbezorger van oeverloze tolerantie. Wel was hij jurist en realist genoeg om aan wetgevers al op voorhand ruimte en flexibiliteit te bieden. Wetten konden en mochten variëren. De wetten van Mozes waren niet door God gegeven om automatisch te kopiëren naar alle tijden en plaatsen.

Maar dat lag anders voor de Tien Geboden. Die zijn universeel. De overheid is gebonden aan de beide tafels van de wet. Tolerantie voor zaken die daarmee lijnrecht in strijd zijn, is uit den boze. De soevereiniteit van God, de autoriteit van Gods Woord, de gerichtheid op Zijn eer – dat zijn de drie grondpijlers waarop Calvijns staatkundige opvattingen rusten.

Alles moet Hem eren! Wie deze notie terzijde schuift door een politiek van „aanpassen en coaliseren”, leeft niet meer vanuit calvinistisch beginsel, zo waarschuwde de staatkundig gereformeerde voorman ds. G. H. Kersten eens. En met recht!

De mozaïsche wetgeving was niet door God gegeven om automatisch te kopiëren naar alle tijden en plaatsen, maar de Tien Geboden zijn wel universeel. "De overheid is gebonden aan de beide tafels van de wet. Tolerantie voor alles wat daarmee lijnrecht in strijd is, is uit de boze. De soevereiniteit van God, de autoriteit van Gods Woord, de gerichtheid op Zijn eer – dat zijn de drie grondpijlers waarop Calvijns staatsleer rusten."

Er is een groeiende intolerantie voor alles wat niet spoort met de hedendaagse seculiere tolerantiemaat. Iedereen die zich niet onverkort houdt aan de drie-eenheid van een strikte scheiding van geloof en staat, een volstrekt gelijke behandeling van mannen en vrouwen en een rigide gelijkstelling van homo’s en heteroseksuelen, krijgt te maken met eigentijdse libertijnse heksenjachten en brandstapels.

We kunnen Calvijn wel anachronistisch de tolerantiemaat nemen, maar belangwekkender dan de vraag naar de tolerantie van Calvijn is de vraag naar de actuele tolerantie voor Calvijn!
