Relying on the Love of God

And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.

    We can be sure that God loves us. He wants us to live in and be blessed by his love. That love is more than just the grace that reaches us when we are saved. God's love extends through us. His love is redemptive in our loving behavior to others. His presence is seen in our loving attitudes and deeds. God wants his love to be shared by us to others. In this way, his love blesses us when we receive it and also when we share it!

    Father in heaven, I rely on your love. I cannot imagine my life without it; I would be completely lost -- literally and eternally. However, I know you love me Father. I am confident about my future, full of joy in this moment, and standing on tiptoe until your love is fully realized. In Jesus' name I thank you. Amen.

Overdenking van vandaag:

We kunnen er zeker van zijn dat God ons liefheeft. Hij wil dat wij leven in en gezegend worden door zijn liefde. Deze liefde is meer dan alleen de genade die ons bereikt wanneer wij worden gered. Gods liefde loopt via ons. Zijn liefde is verlossend in ons liefdevolle gedrag voor anderen. Zijn aanwezigheid wordt gezien in onze liefdevolle houding en daden. God wil dat zijn liefde door ons wordt gedeeld aan anderen. Op deze wijze zegent zijn liefde ons wanneer we het ontvangen en ook wanneer wij het delen!

 

Gebed:

Vader in de hemel, ik reken op uw liefde. Ik kan me mijn leven niet voorstellen zonder u: ik zou volledig verloren zijn - letterlijk en altijd. Maar ik weet dat u van mij houdt Vader. Ik heb vol vertrouwen in mijn toekomst, ben vol vreugde op dit moment en sta op het puntje van mijn tenen totdat uw liefde volledig gerealiseerd is.

Misleading Pictures

"More modern ideas present Jesus in a different way. He is the champion of the vagrants, the leader of reactionaries. This too is misleading. Jesus did not come with a social gospel. He was not a superstar. He came to show people a better way.

It is his strength of purpose more than his physique or his manner that we should admire. It is the fortitude with which he met scorn and ridicule. It is the way in which, unflinchingly, he faced the cross. The prophets had foretold his suffering. Yet his determination never wavered.

Even quite early in his ministry, Jesus had experienced rejection. He had visited Nazareth. At first he had received an enthusiastic reception. People had heard of his teaching and miracles. Men like to be associated with a hero. They welcomed him and pressed home the fact that he had grown up in their town.

As Jesus began to talk, they were pleasantly surprised by his words. When, however, he began to say that they would be unwilling to receive his teaching, they changed. They quickly became opposed. When he showed that God had turned to the Gentiles in the past, they became angry.

Jesus said that they would use a proverb against him. It was "Physician, heal yourself!". They led him out to the top of the hill on which Nazareth was built. They had intended to throw him over as they did with criminals. Jesus, however, escaped. His words were prophetic though. At the cross they threw those words back at him. "He saved others; himself he cannot save." In effect they were repeating the proverb, Saviour, save thyself.

Despite the experience of Nazareth, Jesus did not turn away from Jerusalem. Luke's gospel shows that he "steadfastly set his face" to go there. It is this courage and determination that makes the picture of a pale and sickly figure so unsuitable. It is his isolation from the crowd that makes the idea of a hero of the masses so untrue.

Yet there was much more to the Lord than strong resolution only. People came to him with different needs. Whatever their need was, it was met and answered in Jesus. No-one ever came to the Lord and found him too busy. None was ever asked to make an appointment or turned away."

Zwolse Bijbel

Herman Droem, diaken van het Mariakapittel in Utrecht, bestelde in 1464 een monumentale Bijbel bij de broeders van het gemene leven in Zwolle.

Een zekere Jacobus van Enkhuysen werkte twaalf jaar aan het overschrijven van de Bijbel (van zes delen van 20 kilo per stuk). Drie minuten per regel. Lang heeft Droem niet van de zesdelige Bijbel gebruik kunnen maken; hij stierf drie maanden nadat deze was voltooid.

De Zwolse Bijbel is een van de handschriften die te zien zijn op de tentoonstelling ”Beeldschone boeken. De middeleeuwen in goud en inkt” in museum Catharijneconvent in Utrecht,tot 23 augustus  (www.catharijneconvent.nl).
